NAB 2018: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Now, the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K was presented by Blackmagic DesignThe new version of the camera was unveiled at NAB 2018, transitioning from recording in Full HD to 4K. Let's get to know the new camera!

We have the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K

As we mentioned, the cinematographic camera that was finally presented will have a micro 4/3 sensor, unlike the previous version which was 16mm, which will lead to an improvement in ISO and also allow more control over depth of field. Its dynamic range will be 13 stops and the greatly improved ISO will reach 25,600. For recording, we will be able to use SD/UHS-II and CFAS cards.

Regarding the body, we find a size larger than the previous one, but with a 5-inch screen and a mount that will allow us to use Panasonic, Minolta, among others, without an adapter. Its body is designed with a somewhat futuristic frame made of carbon fiber polycarbonate, making it durable and very lightweight.

Finally, we cannot forget to mention the USB-C port that will allow us to save the captured material directly to the same external storage unit.

Diving into image quality, we can say that the sensor offers us a native resolution of 4096 x 2160 in 10-bit ProRes format and 12-bit RAW. This works very well with the advanced color science of Blackmagic Design, resulting in cinematic images superior to DSLR cameras and many digital cinema cameras. The new camera will allow us to record at 60 fps in 4K and 120 fps in Full HD with a sensor crop.

We have built-in microphones directly in the camera, with significant noise attenuation, a mini XLR input with 48V phantom power for connecting professional microphones. Additionally, we will also find another additional 3.5mm connection for various lower-quality microphones.

Conclusion

It is a camera that undoubtedly provides us with superior professional cinematic quality compared to DSLR cameras and many digital cinema cameras. With a small body, it will be ideal for those companies and freelancers who carry out independent productions, corporate videos, fiction, documentaries, and more. A great option that, according to some rumors on various websites, is said to have a launch price around 1300 dollars approximately. If you were thinking of investing in a camera that records in 4K and want to buy a camera that offers you excellent quality, I recommend waiting for it (if you're not in a hurry) to see it tested and check the first results.
