Blackmagic Ursa Mini pro vs Ursa Mini 4.6K | Differences.
With the experience we have in our production company in the rental section, we have noticed many doubts from our clients when choosing the camera. This reason has led us to create a post where we can discuss the difference between “Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro” and “Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4.6K”, which, on the other hand, has a name that sets it apart. What are their main differences?
Before answering this question, we would like to say something very important: they are the same camera with the same characteristics except for some external functionalities that we will mention below. But first, let's see what makes these the cameras of the moment for many creative agencies and production companies.
Similarities between the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro and 4.6K cameras
- Lightweight digital cinema cameras on the market with a super 35 sensor.
- 4.6K cinematic sensor. 4608 x 2592 pixels which is larger than DCI 4K.
- Recording in ProRes and RAW.
- Continuous recording.
- Dynamic range of 15 stops.
- XLR and SDI 12G connections.
- Integrated microphone in the camera
- Touchscreen with all functions to control the image.
As we can see, these characteristics are what usually define a camera version, in this case for both. They are identical and offer the same image quality. Now we ask ourselves, what are the differences? Let's take a look at them, but first, we leave you a couple of videos to see the fantastic image quality they offer.

Next, we are going to look at the main features of the new version:
- Built-in ND filters (2-4-6 stops).
- Two slots for SD cards.
- Camera information and controls on the external part of the screen.
- Interchangeable mount EF, PL, B4.
As we can see, the new version comes with interesting changes that can facilitate some shoots we may have, but in essence, the camera remains the same with identical quality. Therefore, if you are thinking about buying it or you need to rent it, think carefully about how you are going to use it (especially because of the economic difference that exists).
We say this because Blackmagics, and we have the experience from the type of rentals we receive and our own productions, are studio and/or set cameras, where lighting is always controlled by the director of photography and ND filters are for outdoor use. This does not mean that you cannot use it for outdoor recordings, but it occurs in 10% of cases. Another detail to keep in mind is the screen; in the new version it is smaller and the image quality drops significantly. When viewed from the sides, it is difficult to identify a clear image with real colors; this is a very important detail because we are delighted with the first version that offers us spectacular quality and comfort.
Ultimately, this will depend a lot on the shoot, but with this post, we wanted to provide our clients with as much information as possible so they can know that with either of the two, they will have a production of excellent quality.
